Industrialization of wooden construction (including renovation)

The aim of the WG is to identify possible solutions that can be addressed through innovation. Innovation can be both technological and non-technological. The first topic chosen is the industrialization of renovation/construction using wood. It is being addressed jointly by Valbowal and ReNow (IIS dedicated to renovation in DIS4). To this end, a common definition of the massification and industrialization of the value chain has been drawn up. The next step was to clearly define the issues at stake with private and academic players in the wood value chain. The first meeting, held on June 26, 2024, confirmed the following eight issues:
  1. What are the prospects for the availability anduse of materials from the wood sector for industrialization? What opportunities, and therefore what technical validations, should be considered?
  2. Multifunctionality of building caissons: How can we optimize functions and constraints relating to inputs, production - storage and distribution of collectivized energy? ?
  3. More unusual items: what technical solutions can be found for construction details (doors, joinery, junctions with adjoining buildings, elevation, etc.)?
  4. Renovationindustrialization and the condition of the existing building (stability, humidity, etc.): how do we link up with the diagnostic stages? And how can industrialization be optimized?
  5. Harmonization of town-planning and logistical protocols on a municipal scale: what solutions and tools can be envisaged to facilitate the industrialization of renovation using timber construction on the ground, with a view to mass production on a municipal scale?
  6. The role of theproject owner: what framework, tools and approaches should be developed to reassure and convince him or her (at the design stage, through long-term performance monitoring, etc.)?
  7. Mass customization: how can we maintain a personalized approach in an industrialized context, both in terms of the market and the extension of building systems, while meeting the needs of the client ?
  8. Market access for companies: what innovative systems can be developed to overcome current constraints, such as the classification of companies or their references, in public procurement contracts? How can companies pool their services with a view to developing the Walloon industry?
The companies present insisted on the need to integrate the work of this Valbowal-ReNow WG into the places that already bring them together, so as not to multiply the number of places and meetings. In particular, we have identified the Buildwise technical committees, the Filière Bois Innovation WGs and other ideation events organized by GreenWin and ULiège as Valbowal partners.
